The Casio CZ-1 is a 16 voice phase distortion digital synthesizer. The CZ-1 has a five octave 61 key non-weighted keyboard with velocity sensitivity and after-touch. It has 16 digitally controlled oscillators with eight digital waveforms to choose from, three of which have a resonant filter type sound. The entire CZ series uses what Casio called Phase Distortion. Phase Distortion attempts to simulate an analog resonant filter by modulating a waveform by another waveform creating a new waveform that has harmonics based on the two input waveforms. The CZ-1 has an eight stage DCA with key follow. There is also a ring modulator and a noise generator. It is multi-timbral and can store splits and layers into memory. The CZ-1 uses the Casio RA-3 ram cartridge to store additional user patches and is the only CZ series synthesizer with a backlit display. The CZ-1 was first released in 1986 by
Casio Computer Company, Ltd. of Japan.
